By announcing Graph search, Facebook has declared a new war with Google. It may be not an alternative to Google, but with its 1 billion active users, it can cross all the limits.Graph search is developed to give Facebook users an easy way to explore its contents. At present, we have to visit someone`s profile, page or group to view its content, but Graph search will replace this method by allowing us search our desired contents directly from the search box.
This may sound a bit crazy that the search giant and the king of internet have to worry about a social network, but Facebook`s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg`s speech cleared that this new project has some big surprises packed inside it.First of all, let us see the working base of both competitors.
Google`s powerful bots (spiders) crawls every page on the internet and stores it in its cache.Whenever some one types a query in the search giant, it immediately start searching it on its 13 billion stored web page data files on its memory. It decides the relevance of the search results by looking at the page`s authority and rank.Due to a huge number of webpages, there is more probability to get your content from Google.
Because the data is already stored, It gives the results less than a second.
Facebook Graph Search
Facebook Graph search also works on the same base as Google. The main difference here is that Facebook does not collects data from any website, it does it from profiles, pages and groups.Because these all data is already stored in Facebook`s memory, it does a search directly in Groups, pages and profiles. After this, it filters and gives out the best results to the users.Due a to a huge user base, there are high chances to get your desired data.
Graph search will allow you to search some typical queries, which Google can`t.For example if you search this query ”Which shopping center did my friends visit most last year,” it will start looking over the data on your friend`s profile and collects the data of their photos, videos and statuses which were written about a mall and after this, it calculates the most common mall keyword from every friend`s profile and it will deliver the answer to your query. This image will clear that :
Just like this when you search terms like, “people who like soccer” , it will look on Facebook user`s likes and interest and make a list of those, who have included soccer in their interests or liked a page related to soccer. So, that is an example of typical search, which you can`t do on Google as it does not know your friends and their interests.
- You cannot search a file in Graph Search, only a few types of file can be found over it
- It allows to search places and maps but not better as Google does
- You cannot search about an external site in it, which Google does in seconds
- If a user wants, they can limit his profile`s privacy to him only, which will block graph search from searching it.On the other hand, there are very less websites, who blocked Google yet.
Founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg said that Facebook has two base pillars, including the Timeline and News feed.Graph search will be the third pillar of Facebook. His voice on the video, showed that how important this project is for him.He also said that “its just a start” !.This term means a lot.If these type of typical quires are the starting point of the graph search, then what will Facebook bring in the next few months.Mr. Zuckerberg said that it could take a couple of years to get the graph completely developed.Facebook may add some anti Google features, which can make Google to add some thing new in its system. But currently both the search giants are good at there places.Graph search is good when are searching something about your friends, places or family and Google is suitable for all other searches. The competition between these two companies is making then them to add introduce something new and improving them for the internet audience.
Facebook graph is currently in beta version and is only available to selected people. But if you want to get it before your friends, read this.
