How to create A Starburst Effect in Photoshop

 

Starburst is a effect in which a number of lines joins at a single point at the center.It is mostly used as a background of memes and other funny images, to make them more attractive.In this tutorial we will learn two ways of creating a starburst effect in Adobe Photoshop and we will only use it`s inbuilt editing tools, no external image or brush.

First method of creating a starburst effect

In this method, we will only draw a gradient, and apply some filters to change its shape.

Step 1 :

Open Photoshop, Go to file ► new and make new document in RGB mode.

Step 2 :

Grab the Gradient tool by pressing “G”, and select same colors for background and foreground, but choose a darker color for the background.I am using “00ff1e” for foreground, and “04960b” for background.After that, make sure that you have selected these options in the gradient menu.

 

Step 3 :

Now Draw a gradient (By holding “Shift”) from top to the bottom of the canvass.

Now go to Filter ► Distort ► wave, and try to bring this type of result, by adjusting the options :

Step 5:

Go to Filter ► distort ► polar coordinates and select “Rectangular to polar” then click “OK”.

You are done !

Tip: If lines of your starburst are thick, adjust wave settings to reduce it.

Alternate method

In this method, we will draw the outlines of the starburst with a brush and fill it with colors.

Step 1 :

Open Photoshop, Go to file ► new and make new document in RGB mode.Also open and place the image on which you want to create this effect.

Step 2 :

Firstly, reduce the image`s opacity, now select the hard brush tool and make your foreground color black. Now draw the outlines.

Simply make a click anywhere in the canvass and by pressing shift, click on another area.

This will give you a straight line.

Step 3 :

Do this out lining on a new layer, above your background and below your image layer.

Tip: Reduce your image layer`s fill, so that you can easily draw outlines.

Step 4 :

Now, its time to fill it with colors.I am using red and yellow for this job. (Use the paint bucket tool)

Step 5 (optional) : If you want, you can erase the outlines by one click, using magic eraser tool, and draw your own.
